Massachusetts State Labor Laws

  • Massachusetts is one of the very prosperous states. It is commonly known throughout the world for its university. People from all over the world come here to study. But is it good enough for working? This is definitely a question which must be coming in every bodies mind. So let us explore what this state has for the labors.

    Some of the points are as follows:

    Let’s start with the child labor laws. You can take the example of the child who is below 16 years of age.  The children under 14 years of age are not eligible for work. Those above have some restrictions. They are now allowed to work in the industry where there is power driven machinery. They are also not allowed to cook as the governments find it to be a bad for health.

    They are also not allowed to do the baking activity. Let us now discuss that when are the children between the age 14 years and 15 years eligible for work? Let me tell you that they can work in between 7:00am and 7:00pm.

    As far as the maximum hours of work for the children is concerned, they are allowed to work for 4 hours a day during the school days and they are also not allowed to work for more than 8 hour on the school days. They are allowed to work for six days a week. They cannot work for more than 18 hours a week. All these laws are to be followed strictly.

    As far as the wage rate is concerned, you will find the Massachusetts to be excellent. The minimum wage which an employee can get in this state is $8.00 which is definitely the best in the country. You will find all kinds of industry out here in this state.

    The employer cannot really discriminate between the employees on the basis of caste, creed, religion, color and so on. If any employer is found misbehaving on this account then they will definitely be punished.

    As per the women harassment is concerned let me tell you that no employer is allowed to misbehave with the women. If some employer is caught doing this then he will definitely be punished very badly. Hence make sure that you keep a distance from the women harassment. It is a very big crime.

    As far as the leave is concerned, there is no provision by the state government. But the employees have to provide the maternity leave and some other leaves as well. They are not forced but most of the employer does provide such leaves.

    These are some of the laws which are popular in Massachusetts. The employer and the employee should definitely make sure that they follow them strictly.
